Working In A Laboratory Surrounding
The DNR company requested to develop and design a system of biological tests. The existing systems in the market are large, complex and very expensive. We aimed to develop a system that allows a targeted choice of functions. The customer selects the alternating components which will be used, a choice that allows a significant reduction in the price of the product. He/she is given a choice for the base of the camera, manually changeable filters, and various lighting types and so on. The desire of the company was to produce a smaller product and significantly less expensive than the competition, that will fit well in small laboratories.
We examined the living environment of the product. We have mapped the form of laboratory work, the main users and similar products in the field. We explored several design Languages aside complex and simple systems. We have interviewed users, and understood the needs, problems and difficulties.
A product whose environment is a laboratory has a clear and clean language. The system should be easily integrated in a surrounding that is loaded with various devices, and allow users an efficient and comfortable work flow. We wanted to give a symmetrical appearance, and a simple and fluid shape. Using two and three-dimensional sketches we examined volumes, proportions and different divisions.
To design a complex system containing many interchangeable components we created different usage configurations. Each configuration offered various ways for parts replacement and convenient and efficient product use. The selected configuration consisted of a top cover and a changeable bases.
The Development Process
The system’s design included work on a variety of bases that allow different exams. The system knows how to fit any base, and allow the most accurate result. As part of the development work has been done on the complex optics, sensitive filters and to different illuminations. The system was designed for high-pressure injection: with unique plastics design we enabled a unique air inlet together with complete insensitivity to light. We chose colors and textures that provide a solution for sealing of light and enable precision optical design. Later we performed analyzes that allowed optimizing heat temperature for the changeable bases.
Design For Manufacturing
At the end of the development process a detailed design for production is done-we located factories and qualified subcontractors. Production and dyeing are made in China, and assembly process in Israel. The product passed validation and subsequently the entire production line was designed.
