A Revolutionary Idea
Dafni is a start-up company founded and established by a father and daughter, both engineers by profession. In their home garage, they started the firm that developed the first ceramic brush. The need for this product was very clear – many people straighten their hair frequently yet there is no affordable and time sensitive solution. The available options only include a choice between straightening at a professional salon and doing it yourself with existing ceramic straighteners. That means either regular and expensive appointments or spending a long time straightening yourself with the risk of burns.
Market Research And Target Audience
The idea for the Dafni brush was to develop a product that uses the natural brushing stroke and straightens hair simultaneously. The combing action significantly reduces the time it takes to straighten compared to other hair straighteners. The developers created a prototype that demonstrated the concept in order to create a complete product. The project required design and engineering such as providing technical solutions and the development of a completely new design language. We began the process by researching the market for hair products and understanding its trends in the field. We explored different design languages and how they interfered or complemented users and their habits. We analyzed the shape of the grip, ergonomics and use.
We formulated a precise synopsis that included all the conclusions from the study. The brush design process and engineering development were simultaneous. The goal was to develop a unique and contemporary language compatible to the product’s innovative vision. We examined a number of operational configurations and created several design languages with two and three dimensional sketches. We studies volumes, sizes, grip shapes and usage. Ultimately, we used customer input to choose the most suitable design that still conveyed all pre-defined values.
The brush has ceramic conducting pins that heat uniformly and smoothen the hair from the root. During the engineering development phase, we explored unique materials that endure high temperatures and are optimal for the smoothing operation. We were looking for design solutions that will protect the scalp from direct heat thus developing a comb structure with isolated spring pins. The isolated pins prevent direct contact with the scalp, allowing a softer touch for the user while simultaneously offering protection from direct contact with the heated ceramic part. During the development we carried out heat analysis and examined all the various solutions.
Design For Manufacturing
After the product has been validated we carried out detailed design for manufacturing and built a stable assembly line. We located a factory that carries out all processes and manages the sub-suppliers. At Arkit we focus on product development and support until the product arrives at the shelf. We accompanied the Dafni’s development throughout the manufacturing process, including the final production.
